Constructions that meet it

  • PVC sheath (self-extinguishing): changes no layer: a property of the sheath compound. PVC sheath (self-extinguishing) (PVC). Drawbacks: Halogens.
  • Halogen-free flame-retardant sheath (LSZH): changes no layer: a property of the sheath compound. Halogen-free flame-retardant sheath (FRNC / LSZH) (LSZH). Drawbacks: Filled compound; weaker mechanically, more water uptake.
  • A PE sheath does not pass: A warning, not a construction.

Tests

  • IEC 60332-1-2:2025 Ed.2 (replaces 2004 + A1:2015); EN 60332-1-2: 1 kW pre-mixed flame on a single vertical sample, 60 s up to 25 mm diameter, 120 s to 50 mm, 240 s to 75 mm, 480 s above. Pass: Annex A Table A.1: char ends more than 50 mm below the upper clamp and burned length not beyond 540 mm (Currenta; Lapp gives the 50 mm rule)
  • IEC 60502-2:2014 clause 19.16: flame spread test on single cables (calls IEC 60332-1-2). Pass: not read

In the base standard for some designs: IEC 60502-2:2014 clause 19.16, flame spread test on single cables (calls IEC 60332-1-2); which sheaths it applies to was not read.

How specifications state it

The most common fire clause: 'flame retardant acc. to IEC 60332-1-2'.

Where it is asked for

  • almost every indoor and tray installation
  • CPR class Eca
  • Ex areas (IEC 60079-14)
