Flame retardance, bunched cables (IEC 60332-3 categories)

Flame does not spread up a vertical bunch of cables with a stated fire load.

Constructions that meet it

  • Flame-retardant sheath and bedding compounds: changes no layer: a property of the sheath compound. Flame-retardant sheath and inner covering compounds (FR-PVC, FRNC/LSZH, SHF1/SHF2) (FR compound). Drawbacks: Higher filler content; the whole cable's non-metallic volume counts, so inner layers and fillers matter too.
  • Flame-retardant fillers: changes no layer: a property of the filler compound. Flame-retardant fillers and bedding (LSZH or FR compound).

Tests

  • IEC 60332-3-21 (Cat A F/R): power cables over 35 mm², spaced front and rear. Pass: char height limit in the annex
  • IEC 60332-3-22 (Cat A): 7 l/m non-metallic volume, 40 min flame. Pass: char height limit in the annex
  • IEC 60332-3-23 (Cat B): 3.5 l/m, 40 min. Pass: char height limit in the annex
  • IEC 60332-3-24 (Cat C): 1.5 l/m, 20 min, 20.5 kW burner, 3.5 m sample (EN 60332-3-10 chamber). Pass: destroyed length ≤ 2.5 m (as used in EN 45545-2)
  • IEC 60332-3-25 (Cat D): 0.5 l/m, small cables (≤ 12 mm, ≤ 35 mm²). Pass: flame time: not found

How specifications state it

Named by category: 'IEC 60332-3-22 Cat A' (marine and industrial), Cat C for buildings; CPR uses EN 50399 instead.

Where it is asked for

  • cable trays and shafts
  • power plants
  • marine and offshore (Cat A)
  • Ex areas (Prysmian: Cat C or better)
  • railway (EN 45545-2 via EN 60332-3-24)
