Fire resistance, circuit integrity
The cable keeps its circuit working for a stated time in a fire (emergency lighting, alarms, smoke extraction, pumps).

Constructions that meet it
- Glass-mica tape over each conductor: changes the cable's layers. Glass-mica tape(s) lapped over each conductor under the insulation (mica on glass cloth). Drawbacks: Most common; slightly larger diameter, care at stripping.
- Ceramifying insulation: changes no layer: a property of the insulation compound. Ceramifying (silicone or polymer) insulation or fire barrier compound (ceramifying compound (Datwyler 'Keram')). Drawbacks: No extra layer; compound cost.
- Halogen-free sheath over the fire barrier: changes the cable's layers. Halogen-free flame-retardant sheath (LSZH) over the fire barrier, often a red or orange sheath (LSZH). Drawbacks: Required alongside for most fire-resistant families.
- Mineral insulated copper sheathed cable (MICC): changes the cable's layers. Mineral insulated copper sheathed cable (MICC) (MgO in copper tube). Drawbacks: Typical alternative; special terminations. No maker sheet read here.

Tests
- IEC 60331-1:2018: fire with shock, at least 830 °C, cables over 20 mm, up to 0.6/1 kV. Pass: circuit integrity for the stated time (Draka: 120 min)
- IEC 60331-2:2018: same for cables up to 20 mm. Pass: stated time (Draka, Datwyler: 120 min)
- IEC 60331-11 / -21: fire alone, at least 750 °C. Pass: stated time (Datwyler 180 min; Draka also 180 min at 1000 °C, enhanced)
- BS 6387: C: 950 °C for 3 h; W: 650 °C 15 min + 15 min with water; Z: 950 °C 15 min with shock every 30 s. Pass: CWZ = all three
- EN 50200 (BS EN 50200): 830 °C with shock every 5 min, cables up to 20 mm; Annex E water spray. Pass: PH15, PH30, PH60, PH90, PH120
- BS 8434-2: 930 °C version of EN 50200 with water spray, plus EN 50200 PH120. Pass: 120 min
- BS 8491:2008: cables over 20 mm, 842 °C, impact and water jet. Pass: F30, F60, F120
- DIN 4102-12: system test of cable with its supports in a furnace on a standard temperature curve, at up to 400 V. Pass: E30, E60, E90 (system circuit integrity, depends on the support system)
- VDE 0472-814: insulation integrity. Pass: FE180
How specifications state it
Named by test and class: 'FE180 / E90', 'PH120', 'BS 6387 CWZ', 'IEC 60331-1/-2 120 min'. National codes decide which.
