JIS type names (Japan): how to read the cable type names

Each name in JIS type names (Japan) stands for a whole cable type: CVV, for example, comes with its own construction, standard and rating. The decoder knows 18 types of this system. Below: how the names are built, every type with its rating, and the sources the table names.

How a name is built

The type table splits each name into parts and records what each part means. A few names taken apart:

Marks written next to the name

Words and marks the decoder reads next to a type name of this system: each adds a property to whatever type it is written with.

MarkMeaningWritten as

JIS type names (Japan): what does C mean in a cable name?

C means: C: cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) insulation. Used in CV, CVD, CVT, CVQ, CV-S, CE, CET.

JIS type names (Japan): what does FD- mean next to a cable name?

FD-: FD-: flame-retardant PVC sheath that passes the IEEE 383 vertical tray test. Written as FD.

What is CVV-S cable?

CVV-S: CVV control cable with a copper tape shield. Rating: 600 V, 60 C (SFCC p.29). Standard: JCS 4258. The name reads: CVV (CVV: control cable with PVC insulation and a PVC sheath) + -S (-S: copper tape shield over the laid-up cores (static shield)).
