Constructions that meet it

  • Cold-flexible sheath compound: changes no layer: a property of the sheath compound. Cold-flexible sheath compound (special PVC, PE, PUR, cross-linked polyolefin or rubber) (cold-grade compound). Drawbacks: Lapp ÖLFLEX ROBUST FD: -40 °C flexible, -50 °C fixed. Arctic PVC grades cost more.
  • Cold-flexible insulation (EPR, XLPE): changes no layer: a property of the insulation compound. Cold-flexible insulation (EPR, XLPE rather than PVC) (EPR / XLPE). Drawbacks: PVC insulation is the weak point at low temperature (typical).

Tests

  • IEC 60811-504:2012: bending test at low temperature for insulations and sheaths. Pass: no cracks; temperature set by the specification
  • IEC 60811-506:2012: impact test at low temperature for insulations and sheaths. Pass: no cracks; temperature set by the specification
  • EN 50618 Annex C: cold impact at -40 °C (EN 60811-506). Pass: no cracks
  • CSA (cold bend and cold impact): mandrel wrap; 1.36 kg dropped from 0.91 m at the test temperature. Pass: a cable marked -40 °C passes both at -40 °C (Texcan)

How specifications state it

Specified as a minimum installation temperature and a minimum service temperature, proven by IEC 60811-504/-506 (or CSA) at that temperature.

Where it is asked for

  • arctic and Nordic projects
  • LNG plants
  • outdoor installations in winter
  • wind turbines (cold climate)
  • Canada (-40 °C marking)
