Oil resistance (mineral oil)

The sheath keeps its strength and elongation after contact with mineral oils.

Constructions that meet it

  • Oil-resistant sheath compound: changes no layer: a property of the sheath compound. Oil-resistant sheath compound (PVC TM5, PUR, polychloroprene EM2/EM5, CPE, SHF2) (oil-resistant PVC, PUR, PCP, CPE, SHF2). Drawbacks: Compound choice; PUR and PCP cost more.
  • Hard polyamide (nylon) jacket over the sheath: changes the cable's layers. Extra nylon jacket (PA). Drawbacks: North American THHN-style conductors are oil resistant through the nylon (typical).

Tests

  • IEC 60811-404:2012: mineral oil immersion tests for sheaths (replaces IEC 60811-2-1 clause 10). Pass: set by the product standard
  • IEC 60502-2:2014 clause 19.14: oil immersion test for elastomeric sheaths. Pass: not read
  • IEC 60092-360 (marine): IRM 902 oil, 168 h at 100 °C. Pass: not given in the maker sheet
  • Lapp internal test after EN 60811-404: 24 h at 100 °C on the sheath. Pass: not given
  • EN 50363-4-1 TM5: oil-resistant PVC sheath compound type. Pass: compound type

In the base standard for some designs: IEC 60502-2:2014 clause 19.14, oil immersion test for elastomeric sheaths.

How specifications state it

Named by test and oil (IRM 902) and duration; marine and industrial cables carry it routinely.

Where it is asked for

  • machine tools
  • industrial plants
  • marine and offshore
  • automotive manufacturing
