Drilling mud and hydrocarbon resistance (offshore, NEK TS 606)

Offshore cables survive drilling fluids, brines and base oils on drill floors and mud areas.

Constructions that meet it

  • SHF2 MUD sheath compound (NEK TS 606): changes no layer: a property of the sheath compound. SHF2 MUD outer sheath: halogen-free thermoset (EVA rubber) qualified for mud (SHF2 (cross-linked halogen-free, EVA based)). Drawbacks: Same layer as a normal SHF2 sheath; only the compound changes. 56-day tests lengthen qualification.
  • Lead sheath under the outer sheath: changes the cable's layers. Lead sheath under the outer sheath for aromatic hydrocarbons (Pb). Drawbacks: See lead-sheath.

Tests

  • NEK TS 606:2022 (also cited: NEK 606:2009, NEK TS 606:2016) with IEC 60092-360: IRM 903 oil 168 h at 100 °C; calcium bromide brine 56 days at 70 °C; EDC 95-11 base oil 56 days at 70 °C. Pass: property retention limits not found in public sheets
  • IEC 61892-4 Annex D: mud resistance, cited by Tratos. Pass: not found

How specifications state it

Named as 'mud resistant acc. to NEK TS 606 (edition)' and an SHF2 MUD sheath.

Where it is asked for

  • offshore drilling rigs and FPSOs (Norwegian sector)
  • onshore drilling
