SER 4-4-4-6 AL 600 V

Nominal calculation, not one manufacturer's datasheet. The conductors are compact aluminium as Southwire prints them; the XHHW-2 walls, the jacket and the ground are the values the makers print, because UL 854 was not read. Seven makers' cables of the same name differ by up to 20 % in diameter: check the datasheet before you specify or order.

By NEC Table 8 and the catalogued walls, SER 4-4-4-6 AL 600 V comes to an overall diameter of about 19.2 mm and a weight of about 350 kg/km.

SER is the UL 854 service entrance cable of NEC Article 338: two, three or four XHHW-2 conductors of one size and a smaller bare ground cabled round, no fillers, a binder tape and a gray PVC jacket. Aluminium AA-8000, compact stranded. Checked against Southwire, Encore, Priority Wire, Cerrowire, Houston Wire & Cable and Nassau: research/designer-americas/ser.md in the site repository.

Materials in this cable: Aluminium, XLPE, PVC

Weight, by part

Conductors220 kg/km
Metal screens and armour0 kg/km
Insulation, semicon, tapes, fillers and sheaths140 kg/km
Total350 kg/km

Each layer's cross-section times its density; stranded conductors, laid-up cores and helical wires count 2 % longer than the cable. Densities: copper 8.89 and aluminium 2.703 g/cm³ (the values of IEC 60028 and IEC 60889); XLPE 0.92, PE 0.94, PVC 1.45, semicon 1.12, steel 7.85 g/cm³ (usual compound values).
