Constructions that meet it

  • Water-resistant rubber (EI4 / EM2): changes no layer: a property of the sheath compound. Water-resistant rubber insulation and sheath (H07RN8-F: EI4 / EM2) (EM2 polychloroprene, EI4). Drawbacks: Rubber cords; AD8 (Nexans).
  • PE sheath, low water absorption: changes no layer: a property of the sheath compound. PE sheath and low water absorption compounds (PE). Drawbacks: Not flame retardant.
  • Aluminium laminate bonded to the sheath: changes the cable's layers. Radial barrier (laminate or metal sheath) (Al / PE). Drawbacks: For MV permanently in water.

Tests

  • IEC 60364-5-51:2005 Table 51A (HD 60364-5-51) external influence AD7 / AD8: classification of water exposure, p. 23: AD7 immersion, intermittent partial or total covering by water (IPX7); AD8 submersion, permanent and total covering by water above 10 kPa (IPX8). Pass: maker test to the depth claimed
  • EN 50565-2: use guidance: H07RN-F class cables for permanent submersion (Lapp: up to 10 m, max +40 °C water). Pass: not found
  • IEC 60811-402 (IEC 60502-2 clause 19.15): water absorption test on insulation. Pass: not read

In the base standard for some designs: IEC 60502-2:2014 clause 19.15, water absorption test on insulation.

How specifications state it

Written as 'AD8, submersion to X m' or 'suitable for wet locations'; the depth is the maker's.

Where it is asked for

  • submersible pumps
  • fountains and pools
  • PV on floating or flooded sites
  • tunnels and pits
