Project requirements · Water

Longitudinal watertightness

Water that enters at a damaged point does not travel along the cable (screen area and/or conductor).

Constructions that meet it

  • Swelling tapes over and under the metal screen: changes the cable's layers. Swelling tapes over and under the metal screen (semiconductive or non-conductive swelling tape). Drawbacks: Thin; slight diameter increase.
  • Watertight conductor (swelling powder or yarn): changes no layer: a property of the conductor. Watertight conductor: swelling powder or yarns between wires, swelling tape over the conductor (swelling yarn / powder / tape). Drawbacks: Inside the conductor, so not visible except the tape over it.
  • Swelling yarns in the interstices: changes the cable's layers. Swelling yarns or tapes in the interstices of multicore cables (swelling yarn).

Tests

  • IEC 60502-2:2014 clause 19.24 and Annex F: water penetration test. Pass: Annex F requirements (values not read)
  • HD 620 / IEC 60840 (HV): water penetration test of the product standard. Pass: not read

In the base standard for some designs: IEC 60502-2:2014 clause 19.24 and Annex F, water penetration test, for designs with a barrier against longitudinal water.

How specifications state it

IEC 60502-2 includes designs with longitudinal barriers and their test; specifications say 'longitudinally watertight (screen / conductor) acc. to Annex F'.

Where it is asked for

  • MV and HV buried networks
  • wet ducts
  • utilities in Germany, Nordics, Netherlands
