Radial watertightness
A metal barrier stops moisture diffusing through the sheath into the insulation.

Constructions that meet it
- Aluminium laminate bonded to the sheath: changes the cable's layers. Aluminium (or copper) foil laminate applied longitudinally and bonded to the PE sheath (Al / PE laminate). Drawbacks: Thin; bonding makes stripping harder.
- Lead sheath under the outer sheath: changes the cable's layers. Extruded lead sheath (Pb). Drawbacks: Heavy.
- Welded smooth aluminium sheath: changes the cable's layers. Welded smooth or corrugated aluminium sheath (Al). Drawbacks: HV cables; corrugated is larger in diameter.
- Welded corrugated aluminium sheath: changes the cable's layers. Welded smooth or corrugated aluminium sheath (Al). Drawbacks: HV cables; corrugated is larger in diameter.

Tests
No international test method: specifications state this in words. Tests that exist:
- IEC 60502-2 (scope note) and HD 620 / IEC 60840 laminate sheath tests: construction; IEC 60502-2 only recommends considering the risk. Pass: not read
How specifications state it
Specified by construction: 'Al laminate bonded to PE sheath (FL / 2Y)', 'lead sheath', 'welded aluminium sheath'.
Where it is asked for
- MV in wet ground
- HV and EHV cables
- submarine
